Maternity Services Summary

Mount Carmel offers expert, individual, affordable Shared Care and Consultant-led Maternity Care, through an integrated team approach of Consultant obstetricians who work closely with our experienced midwifery team.

Shared Care is where your care during your pregnancy journey is shared between the GP and Consultant Obstetrician. Consultant-led Maternity Care is where you visit your Consultant for your
entire pregnancy. Our aim is to deliver care in a way that suits parents and we offer a choice of consultants who provide a full range of care options.

Ante-natal Care
Ante-natal Care is the care provided to you during your pregnancy and our services include:

• 24 Hour access to a consultant obstetrician, midwifery & medical advice
• Dedicated obstetric physiotherapists
• Dedicated nutritional pregnancy advice
• State of the Art Ultrasound services, including instant access, early pregnancy scanning and 4D scans
• Personalised ante-natal classes

Labour and Delivery
The one to one personalised care you experience throughout your
pregnancy continues when you come to deliver your baby. You and your partner will be cared for in a safe, private and calm environment, your dignity and privacy is paramount. Foremost in the provision of an optimum birthing experience is the continuity of expert care and the safety and comfort of mother and baby. In Ireland, 99% of babies are born after 32 weeks pregnancy* and Mount Carmel is equipped to deal with all eventualities within this group.

If a problem arises prior to 32 weeks, your consultant will determine the appropriate facility for the delivery of your baby, 0.4% or 4 in every 1,000 Mount Carmel deliveries fall into this category.

Epidural
Epidural is available to you 24 hours a day provided it is medically safe to do so and is administered by a Consultant Anaesthetist.

Stem Cell Collection
Mount Carmel Hospital facilitates the collection of Stem Cells at delivery.
You can discuss availing of this option with your Consultant during your ante-natal visits.

Baby
After your baby is born, you have the unique choice of having your baby stay with you in your room or you can avail of our 24 hours a day nursery services. You are free to choose either option, or a combination of the two – whatever suits you and your baby best.
Consultant Paediatricians are available 24 hours a day and will be at your delivery if required. A Paediatrician will carry out a full physical examination of your baby post delivery and will review your baby’s progress each day during your stay. A further physical examination will be carried out again at six weeks in consultation with you. A Consultant paediatric service is also available during the first six weeks post delivery.

Special Care Baby Unit
Should your baby require additional medical or nursing care Mount Carmel has a Special Care Baby Unit. This unit is managed by Consultant Paediatricians and is staffed 24 hours a day by qualified and experienced neonatal nurses.

Post-Natal Care
Post-natal care is the care provided to you and your baby from the time of delivery to your discharge home. Post-natal care includes your healthcare and accommodation needs as well as support and advice from experienced midwives on how to care for yourself and your baby.
To ensure your baby’s safety, the Maternity Unit is fitted with an integrated baby security system.
Post-natal classes, post-natal physiotherapy and access to a team of lactation consultants is also available.

Accommodation
Our private and semi-private bedrooms are fully equipped with your comfort in mind. All rooms have en-suite bathroom facilities, telephone, television and bedside cot for your baby.

Post-discharge Support
Following your discharge home, access to expert support from a Mount Carmel midwife is available 24 hours a day. Mount Carmel Hospital also offers a comprehensive range of general medical services to you and your family.
